.hack//G.U. Vol. 3 - Redemption review

In the year 2006, Namco Bandai and CyberConnect2 join forces to publish the most awesome RPG game in the .hack series to the next level. So what do you think will happen when Namco Bandai and Cyberconnect2 did a great job? And how will Namco Bandai react when Cyberconnect2 joins forces with them? If you want answers, then chances are, you can tell your friends to check out this review of the third and final volume of the series!

The Desktop:

The desktop is a main menu except it has some interesting varieties, like News Capture and Community Forum. You can save your game, watch cutscenes, change a wallpaper, and start up "The World" and Crimson VS. News Capture is a website where you watch some videos pertaining to the news. It lets you know what'll have to the scenery of "The World".

News Capture has a video that has something to do with the "The World". The clip is Online Jack, a video where that man and woman discover the emergencies of "The World". The final episode of Online Jack is the 9th episode.

Welcome to "The World":

It's been 5 years since the classic .hack has the first revision of "The World", an MMO where players have a good time, finding items, completing quests and battling enemies. In .hack//G.U., the new version is "The World Revision 2". It's completely different than in "The World Revision 1". However, the first city that Rebirth takes place is the Eternal City Mac Anu. It's for beginners to begin their journey. It's in the Delta server. In the G.U. series, you are likely to play as Haseo, the main character of "The World Revision 2" He upgrades himself every volume.

"The World" has players that can kill players. They are called PKers (Player Killers). "The World" has @Home Guild classes, such as, Canard, Moon Tree, Raven, Kestrel, and Icolo. Players who had a Guild as Independent didn't assign to a final Guild.

Now moving on to the weapon jobs. Players are assigned to a final weapon job. For instance, Haseo was a dual sword user or a Twin Blades in Rebirth. In the part of Rebirth, Haseo upgrades himself to a form that makes him responsible of using a broad sword. He's now an Adept Rogue, a weapon job who is responsible of using and equipping multiple weapons.

Back in Reminisce, Haseo upgrades himself in the 3rd form that makes him responsible of using a scythe. Now, he had 3 types of weapons. He was called the "Terror of Death" since Reminisce. Reminisce takes place in Celestial City Dol Dona, a place for intermediate players on the Beta server. Overall, the story converts.

Now moving to the part in Redemption. Haseo upgrades himself to the one and only Xth form. The Xth form offers him Dual Guns. They are responsible of targeting flying enemies and avoiding getting hit by counters. 4 types of weapons are in Haseo's possession. Redemption takes place in Dual City Breg Epona, a place for advanced players on the Sigma server.

Let's talk about Areas. Entering an Area is a great way to keep the story going. To enter one, you will touch the Chaos Gate, put in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Area Words and you'll warp to an Area you specified. On the Bookmark menu, those Area Words are given by others and the check symbol represents advancing the story.

All volumes had a Warring City Lumina Cloth, a place where the Arena is born. It's in the Omega server for players who had a tournament membership.

In order to progress the story, you need to log out "The World" to check your email at the desktop when the "You got new mail!" message appears. You look for the message with a red ! before it. It means it's marked important. Look out for important info and you have progress in "The World".

Crimson VS:

Crimson VS is an "automatic" card game where players edit their deck to win a lot. Here's how Crimson VS works. It only works when you're in the desktop or "The World". When some time has passed, you may check how the results are going. You'll probably get some new cards. You'll start in the grade of 300. If you reach a grade of 1, you'll get a special reward. If you're creating a deck, you need to put your General card, then you put your 3 Unit cards. Unit cards are capable of helping your General card. They can be in battle first, then your General enters. If you put 3 certain Unit cards, you start a combo. Cards marked with 1 star means Common. 2 stars means Rare, 3 stars means Super Rare and 4 stars means Ultra Rare. If you're losing a lot, it's a great idea to edit your deck. However, your General card has a Charisma count, so your Unit cards need to be under the Charisma count. There's also a quickest way to get new cards. You will use the first Area Word "Competing".

The Story:

Since Reminisce ends climatically, a young protagonist of "The World" named Haseo is determined to defeat a one-time villain named Ovan. There's a case going on at "The World". Players are PKing in town. What really caused that case that is similar to a murder case from Persona 4 is the one responsible for this. His name was Sakaki, the host of the Sage Palace tournament causing them to side with him. Haseo's Avatar may have defeated Sakaki, but it's not enough to bring "The World" peace back. There's a parasite besides AIDA that causes "The World" to corrupt. Its name was Cubia.

Cubia is a parasite causing "The World" to corrupt. In order to finally bring "The World" back to normal, Haseo and Co. will find Cubia's core and destroy it when Data Drain didn't work so "The World" will be back to its peaceful, rustic self.

The Gameplay:

The gameplay looks the same as previous volumes. In Redemption, Avatar Awakening was learned at the beginning of the game. Overall, the gameplay feels like Tales of Xillia because of the Beast Awakening, Skill Triggers and the Double Trigger, which only works when a Skill Trigger is used and the Dual Guns weapon is assigned to a slot, as well as over-the-shoulder attacks, opening the menu with the triangle button and same digits as HP and SP. There are 22 characters to choose from. The leveling system is still 1000 EXP to level up until level 150 for max.

Avatar Awakening is a type of Awakening used to steal amounts of Virus Cores. Virus Cores are capable of upgrading Lost Weapons. On certain uses, Avatar Awakening levels up. You can spend Virus Cores by going to the temple in the Beta server. It only works when you're in the party of 3 and your Morale gauge is full. Activate it by pressing the square button.

It Must Be the Power of Morality:

Although the battle system in the G.U. series has the much benefits. Like in the classic .hack, you'll fight in a party of three. The G.U. series features a Morale gauge. To fill it up, Haseo's friends and himself place a message. The game has 2 types of normal Awakenings, like the Beast Awakening and the Demon Awakening. The Beast Awakening increases your speed and attack rate. It sort of works like an "Over Limit" from Tales of Xillia. The Demon Awakening lets you use magic without using SP. On both Awakenings, the enemies are slow. When the gauge fills halfway, you can use it, but the gauge consumes fast. If the gauge is full, you can use it and it lasts longer.

In Reminisce, the Divine Awakening is an intense Awakening. You'll need a party of 3 and a full Morale gauge for it to work. If you time it right, you'll deal more damage. However, it's not available for use in Redemption.

Pros:

+Interesting gameplay
+Leveling up quick is interesting to get stronger
+Storyline is epic
+Able to convert data from previous volumes
+Superb gameplay and music quality from Tales of Xillia

Cons:

-Leveling up quick is a thing in the past
-Quests are tedious.

I'll give .hack//G.U. Vol. 3 Redemption a 9.0 for superb. Since it's not in store shelves anymore, it'll be available on the PlayStation Store soon since you are able to download PS2 games on the PS3.
